HealthMark - Key Questions for Your Child’s Health

Be Your Child’s Advocate

You and your child will get a lot more out of your health visits if you do a bit of planning beforehand.  Sitting down to discuss some key questions and answers is a great place to start. By developing your responses you put yourself several steps ahead resulting in a more efficient appointment and a more accurate diagnosis.  The HealthPod Baby can guides you through this discussion.

Ten Key Questions for pre-planning your child’s health appointment:

1) What are the symptoms?

2) When did the symptoms first appear?

3) Is your child better, worse or the same as when the symptoms started?

4) Is your child running a fever?

5) Does anything make the symptoms seem better or worse?

6) Did anything trigger the symptoms?  What was it?

7) Has your child been exposed to anyone with an illness?

8) Has your child recently been injured?

9) What home remedies, over the counter medications or alternative treatments have you tried?

10) Is your child currently taking any medications? If so, what are they? What are the doses and when are they administered?

(Trust yourself. No one knows your child better that you do. If you notice anything unusual, or simply have the feeling that something isn’t quite right, don’t hesitate to call your healthcare provider. You’re not being paranoid, you’re being a parent!)

Moms Who Inspire

May 3rd, 2010

So you know we love moms, right?  With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the team at HealthPod Baby wanted to celebrate and showcase one of the coolest Moms we have worked with in recent months.

Meet Sarah Milne. Sarah is the creatively cool mom behind True Cuddles, a Canadian-based online community and store that sells hip, non-mainstream, hard-to-find baby gear that moms are searching for.  Once a week, True Cuddles highlights and sells a Cuddle of the Week at a deep discount until they are all sold out.  We  asked Sarah a few questions recently so we could learn from her experiences in business and being a mompreneur!  Here is our conversation with Sarah:

True Cuddles is such a little fire engine!  Congratulations on your success so far. Because you’ve inspired us and other small business owners across Canada and the U.S, we thought it would be a great idea to do a feature on you, Sarah, the brains behind True Cuddles, leading up to Mother’s Day.

1. Can you provide some background on your company? When was it founded, by whom, where, achievements thus far, etc.

True Cuddles is a Calgary-based mom-run company!  Our community consists of thousands of hip moms across North America, who loyally read, share, and shop with us.  We’re a fun, unique shopping experience for modern moms to buy high quality products at extremely affordable prices, in a stress free, always open environment.  We’ve been kickin’ since October 2008 and we continue to grow!

Every Monday morning, True Cuddles offers a limited quantity of one baby or toddler product, at a discounted price {35% to 70% off!}, until it sells out.  We call it our “Cuddle of the Week”.  Along with our Cuddles, we also feature other creatively cool mom-runs and offer fabulous giveaways and promotions.

True Cuddles is the brainchild of myself, a web and graphic designer, and a friend, Julie Baron, a marketing misfit.  As moms, we loved searching for products that helped us celebrate motherhood, outfit and nurture our little ones, and of course, keep them safe.  We waded through the clutter of mainstream baby products and were able to find so many uncovered gems, many created by moms just like us.  We wanted to share these gems with other moms…  and the True Cuddles community was born.

2. What inspired you to go into business for yourself?

I’ve owned a web and graphic design studio for nearly 7 years, well before my mommy days.  Back then, I was young, driven, and possessed a strong entrepreneurial spirit.  I wanted to be my own boss.  My husband and I moved to Arizona and I set up shop there.

Seven years, a move back to Calgary, another business, and a baby and a half later… I’m still going strong, though my motivations have changed considerably.

My family is my inspiration. I am lucky and grateful for the opportunity to work from home and also be able to contribute to my little family.

3. What were some of your biggest challenges in starting your business?

Knowing my limits. I often remind myself not to get too ahead of the game.  With a million ideas floating - taking on too much at once is unproductive.  Work becomes overwhelming, ideas, often incomplete, and the fun is stripped.

Making sense of cents. With any small start-up, funds are always an object.  Balancing cash flow and inventory levels bares a challenge.

Having clarity. Identifying a purpose and remaining focused on my goals and objectives, both personal and business.

Managing time. Keeping priorities in check and maintaining a balance between home and business.

4. What have been some of the biggest rewards?

Freedom of time. Having the opportunity to share my days at home {and work} with my daughter takes the cake. It’s allowed me to indulge my raging creativity and business mind, granted me freedom to manage my schedule, and blessed me with time to spend with my little one.  And, with another little one on the way, it’s a refreshing thought that I’ll be able to pick up where I left off when I feel the time is right after life adjusts.

Spreading the love. I enjoy helping other small businesses and mom-preneurs gain exposure and product awareness. And, bringing True Cuddles customers unbelievable deals is equally rewarding.

Watching it grow. Each and every subscriber, Facebook Fan, Twitter Follower is still just as important as they were in the wee beginnings.  The growth of a company is truly rewarding.

5. What are some of the lessons you’ve learned over the past couple of years as a new entrepreneur?

Since May, I’ve been managing True Cuddles on my own.  I had my doubts whether I’d be able to balance this business along with a plate of design work… hours packaging and at the mail… endless emails… and home life…

I made the decision that I wanted to keep it going to see what I could make of it.  I’ve definitely learned a lot in making this decision.  Sticking with something pays off.  Maybe not financially, necessarily, but the personal satisfaction, growth, and positive feedback is well worth it.  I learned that I COULD do it.

6. What do you think it takes to be a successful entrepreneur?

Planning, preparation and research coupled with drive and determination.  An open mind and a willingness to learn. Belief in your ideas and your passions, and remaining true to your goals and objectives.

7. What have been your most important “tools” in starting your business?

Support and motivation from family and friends has been the most valuable “tool”.   Also, having a clear vision and purpose established from the get-go is key and has helped me remain focused and driven.

8. What advice/lessons would you have for a new entrepreneur?

You can never be too prepared - do your research.
Keep an open mind.
Build on your ideas and set clear goals and objectives.
Take your time.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day Sarah! Thanks for continuing to inspiring us.

Let us know if there are some Moms Who Inspire in your life!  We’d love to hear about them.

Entrepreneurial Moms Extraordinaire

April 21st, 2010

reprinted from AWE, Alberta Women’s Entrepreneurs, Profiles of Success

It all started with an ear infection. During weekly breakfasts between three best friends, Nancy Scott discussed how concerned she was with her child’s recurring ear problems. “Because the health care providers didn’t have my son’s health records at the emergency or walk- in clinics, he would often be prescribed antibiotics that hadn’t worked in the past,” said Nancy Scott. “As a result, my son suffered much too long and his body was exposed to unnecessary antibiotics. I quickly realized this was something I could prevent if I kept a record of his medication.” And so the Healthpod Baby was born.

“We kept looking for a product somewhere that kept our babies important information together,” said Jana Sinclair, co-founder of the Healthpod Baby. “We figured if we had a need for a journal to track our baby’s growth and medical history, other parents must have a need for it as well.”

Working with a team of over 20 healthcare providers including doctors, nurses, chiropractors, dentists, surgeons and naturopaths, the ladies of b.l.i.s. (Because Life Is Special) created the Healthpod Baby.

Launched in June 2006, the Healthpod Baby is available online, at 40 retailers across Canada and eight countries worldwide. This handy zip-shut binder keeps your baby’s health information in one place. With a patented sturdy nylon cover that can be wiped free of crumbs and juice, it’s chock full of insight & direction on the inside pages to keep parents organized as babies grow. Parents no longer have to remember every detail of their child’s health history as a record of every shot, sniffle, fever, earache and antibiotic is conveniently contained within the pages of the Healthpod Baby.

b.l.i.s. also spoke to over 200 parents while designing the Healthpod Baby. Their feedback was clear: parents wanted a sturdy binder that could be tossed into a diaper bag, zips up so nothing is lost, has lots of pockets to store information and is durable enough to last a child’s lifetime. To meet parent’s needs, the ladies of b.l.i.s. had the binder custom-made.

“We wanted to make sure that people could really trust the Healthpod Baby,” said Marci Andrews, co-founder. “This consultation process took a year to complete but was an essential step to ensure an excellent product – we had done the thinking for the parents, all they had to do was fill it in.”

AWE helped b.l.i.s. fill in their business plan to take the Healthpod Baby from idea to reality. “Our relationship with AWE has been very important to the growth of our business, both in the creation of the business plan and in financing our start-up,” said Marci. Jana adds that, “We definitely would have struggled without their help and still seek their advice.”

There’s not so much struggling going on now. Retailers are eager to carry the product and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “I can’t live without this,” and “Best baby gift I’ve ever received,” are a sample of the raves about the Healthpod Baby.

The b.l.i.s. ladies will attest that balancing family, careers and a new business venture has been challenging. But as their business grows, so do they. “Sometimes you have to give things up to achieve work and life balance,” said Jana. “It’s given us such a feeling of accomplishment to see this idea go from concept to creation.”

The HealthPod Baby continues to see success and is sure to save the sanity of many parents for years to come. In the spring of 2009, it was named one of the top ten essential pregnancy products by Disney Family, the only Canadian product to make this prestigious list. In addition, Marci was recently named one of Calgary’s “Top 40 under 40” for the success of the HealthPod.

Crazy Wonderful Life

April 1st, 2010

My life is super busy, manageable, but busy. Is this different from everyone else? I don’t think so, but maybe I am wrong. Thinking that everyone is in the same boat makes it easier for me to manage, believing that everyone else is busy too. Is it strange that I was a fan of Jon and Kate + 8, just to witness a life that was more crazier than mine? I must say whatever people have to say about Kate, she ran a pretty tight ship. Sometimes my house still seemed more crazy with half of the kids!

We limit our activities. We try to do most things as a family or have two of the boys on the same team, or all of the swimming lessons at the same time. We still are home together more nights than we are out at activities. When we have one sick child we usually end up with 3 or 4. We always attempt to double or triple up on doctors visits and dentist appointments. Which is always a great plan but something inevitably pops up and we lose one of the team to a cold or an activity that could not be passed up. Then there is the follow up: there is a specialist appointment, or a dental sealant application or there are appointments with just one of the boys and me. This crazy life means some type of organization is required and when it came to the kids’ health, I needed more than just an itty piece of paper – that’s where the HealthPod Baby idea came in. Although as I think of it, I had just had Jack, he was a healthy little guy, and I still thought life was crazy and I was definitely sleep deprived. So maybe regardless of what is happening in your life you are always looking to make life a little easier. Yes?

I have four wonderful little boys and an incredible husband and at the end of the day that makes busy AMAZING. As I write the boys are sleeping and my hubby is next to me watching “The Good Wife” (what does good wife mean anyway?) as we (ok –I) nibble on my new treat chocolate covered graham crackers. How could life not be good? Now ask me tomorrow morning when lunches are getting packed, teeth are getting brushed, library books are missing and homework that was apparently due on Friday is actually due this morning. The two little boys are done eating breakfast and I am not getting to them fast enough. Blueberries are airborne, cereal is dumped and one of them has a bowl on his head to make the other one or all of them laugh, which of course is very successful. Now I am 5 minutes later than I was 5 minutes ago and life is not quite as wonderful as it was last night nibbling on chocolates bonbons getting a massage from the hubby as he whispers sweet nothing in my ear. Have I mentioned that a selective memory and some additional fictional extras really are a nice addition to anyone’s life?!

So is my life that much different than everyone else? I am a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a teammate, a soccer coach, an engineer and a HealthPod maker. And, if I do not go to bed soon I will be all of that mentioned just with grumpy written in front of it and slightly larger dark rings under my eyes. But right now life is pretty crazy wonderful!

Taking care of ourselves

March 9th, 2010

As the only person in the company who doesn’t have kids, I sometimes refer to myself as “the most educated non-parent”!  Having co-created the HealthPod Baby, I have learned so much about raising and caring for kids that I feel like I will be more than ready when it’s my turn to have kids.

The reason that I got into the business of co-creating and selling the HealthPod Baby was simply because I fundamentally believe that everyone is responsible for their own health.  Just like it is our responsibility to take care of our career and not rely solely on our managers or our companies to take care of us, I see that it is even more important to take care of ourselves and be responsible for our own health.  As good as our health system is, it can’t possibly take care of us in a way that we can take care of ourselves.

I was reminded of this today when I went to get a breast ultrasound for some cysts that my doctor recently found.  Because I am HealthPod believer, I use a HealthPod Baby to manage my health.  Although designed with children in mind, it helps me track my health (I have taken out the sections that don’t apply like milestones and food introductions etc) and keep what is most important: emergency information, health contacts, doctor visits, health, dental, specialist summaries, allergies and family history - as you can see a lot applies right through your life!

Going through this experience reminded me about how difficult it is for our medical system to share and gain quick access to our records.   When I arrived at the radiology clinic, they asked me if I had ever had an ultrasound or mammogram before. Luckily I had recorded in my HealthPod that on November 26, 2007, I had an ultrasound and mammogram with the following results.  The technician said, “really, we only show that your last breast ultrasound was in 2002, were did you have it done?”  I had written down that it was at the Women’s Imaging Center.  This information is important as with many medical tests, doctors rely on changes to make better assessments.  This way they could see how it had progressed between 2002, 2007 and today.  She said that they will call the Women’s Imaging Center and get the results sent over for them to compare.

It was an important reminder of how valuable this information is when you really need it and how I can make sure that I am the expert on and owner of my health.

A Time to Reflect

December 11th, 2009

What better time to pause and reflect on the year than when you are snowed in under several feet of snow and subject to  -20 degree temperatures - well, frankly, there’s not much else to do!

It has been another great year for HealthPod Baby - it’s hard to believe another year has gone by so quickly.  Maybe its a function of age, but it seems like time is flying at warp speed!   Grabbing the number one spot on our list of exciting events this year was when Disney Family included HealthPod Baby in their Top 10 Pregnancy Essentials list - we were thrilled!  Another exciting event was when our own Marci Andrews, co-founder of HealthPod Baby, was named one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine - congratulations Marci!   (Check out the article and Marci’s video interview at http://cli.gs/XN9EJT).

We are also thrilled to welcome a new member to the HealthPod Baby team - Kelly Morris.  Kelly joins HealthPod as the new General Manager with a great background in marketing and social media.  We are really excited about Kelly’s ideas regarding social media - so expect to see more about HealthPod when you’re visiting your favourite networking sites.  If you haven’t connected with us on Twitter lately, you should check it out - Kelly has revamped the page and has been diligently tweeting away!

On the flip side, we are sad to say good-bye to two other HealthPod Baby team members, Lisa Hargreaves and Kim Fenton.  Both Lisa and Kim joined us over a year and a half ago.  Lisa was our sales girl extraordinaire and Kim did everything from assembling HealthPods and shipping them out to our customers to sending out all the free gifts with registration.  (If you haven’t registered with us, you might want to!)  Both these girls were extraordinary at what they did and had as much passion for HealthPod Baby as we do.  Unfortunately both had other opportunities that fit their families and lives better than HealthPod - we will miss them and wish them all the best in their future endeavours!

We are also sad to say good-bye to Magda Kaczan.   If you have signed up to receive the HealthPod newsletters, you’ve seen Magda’s work!  She kept us organized with articles and has recently been working on our new web store (to be launched shortly).  Magda recently welcomed a new baby into her family.  Congratulations Magda - we wish you all the best!

After such a busy 2009, we’re wondering what’s in store for 2010…..hopefully we’ll have time to slow down and enjoy all the events of the year instead of watching it whiz by at lightening speed!   From all the HealthPod team, past and present, we would like to wish everyone a happy holiday, and a fun, healthy and exciting 2010!

All the best.
Jana

Moments of Inspiration

June 5th, 2009

For me, owning a business is a bit like golf.  Every once in a while something great happens during your game that brings you back the next time.  While work and golf can both be challenging, there is always that one great moment that motivates you to keep going.

Fortunately, there have been lots of moments with HealthPod Baby that have re-energized me along the way  - emails from registrants that love the HealthPod Baby and talking to people who have found the HealthPod to be truly useful.   One of the great moments came last year when we won the iParenting Media Award for Excellent Product in the baby care category.  This was an amazing accomplishment for us as consumers chose the HealthPod Baby from hundreds of products from all over North America!

Last week we were honoured to find out that HealthPod Baby was chosen by Disney editors to be one of their Top Ten Pregnancy Essentials on their Disney Family web site (see us here at http://family.go.com/products/article-641953-top-pregnancy-essentials-t/6/).  And as the only Canadian product in the Top Ten, we are thrilled!

While we are excited to receive these awards, it is the personal stories from our customers and supporters that keep us motivated every day.  So thanks to everyone who sent us emails about their HealthPod experiences and help us spread the word - you help to `drive` our business!

Have a great day!

Jana

Connecting with Friends

February 24th, 2009

Still going strong after 5 years!

Since the birth of my second baby 7 months ago, I’ve been somewhat negligent when it comes to taking care of myself.  As most new moms experience, sleep deprivation continues to play a role in my life, and my menu typically consists of meals that are easiest to make - not necessarily the healthiest meals.  So, I decided to treat my body to a little TLC last weekend.  I checked into the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel with some friends, spent a day being pampered at the spa and had a fabulous meal in town, complete with dessert!  But the most indulgent part of the weekend was the company.  I didn’t go away with just any friends, but with girls I met more than 5 years ago in a prenatal class for our first babies.

At the time I had hoped to meet a friend that I could hang out in the park with while our kids slept in their car seats.  But I was lucky enough to get more than I had hoped for.  Five years later, I have 4 great friends that I still go out for dinner with every month (dragging our husbands along once or twice a year), still have yearly birthday parties for our kids, have ventured on camping trips together, and as of last weekend, are now attending annual spa weekends!

Although in the early days we thought it was important to get together so our kids could learn to socialize, our get-togethers now are all about us.    We have spent countless hours sharing advice on eating, sleeping, pooping and sickness, as well as the hilarious moments and the frustrating, self-doubting, tearful moments we’ve all experienced as moms.  At the end of each of our get-togethers, we walk away feeling normal, relieved, and so thankful to have friends who know exactly what we are each going through.  And all this happens without judging each other.

Being able to share all these moments of parenthood with friends and other moms helps put perspective into our lives when we are doubting ourselves, helps us feel good about how we are managing the most important job we have, and lets us laugh at the crazy mommy moments we all experience.

I am hoping that by starting this blog this becomes a place where moms can connect, share their stories and experiences, and feel great about what they do at the end of each day.  Every mom deserves at least that - and a spa day if you can fit it in!   Please visit regularly as I’ll be writing about a variety of topics, from a health perspective and a mom perspective.  I would love to hear your questions, comments and suggestions - and I look forward to connecting with you all!

For the month of February, HealthPod Baby is taking a poll on what the top 3 gifts are that moms would love to receive.  If you haven’t submitted your votes, please take a second and let us know what your favourite gifts would be to make your life a little easier.  (Can you guess one of my votes was a spa day?)  Visit: http://www.healthpod.ca/love/

Have a great day everyone!

Jana
